A teaching contract between L. W. Shepherd, Jr., an University of Virginia medical student, and the County of Madison, State of Alabama, dated 1837 February 12th. Also, a letter from Shepard, to [his guardian?] S. D. Cabaniss (Septimus), University of Virginia alumnus, 1832-1834, dated 1857 October 15. He writes regarding his studies; his room "west of the Western Range on a hill called McCoy's Hill. The house at which we board is said to have been built by old Monroe..., "; and, his finances, at which time he requests an additional 25 dollars to buy a case of dissecting instruments and a medical dictionary.
